Torkild Hovde Lyngstad
I am a professor of sociology at Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo. I think of myself as a social science data scientist, with broad interests. I hold a ph.d. from the University of Oslo. The degree was in demography, but my work could just as well sort under sociology. I also hold a cand.polit. degree in sociology, which is equivalent to a two-year Master’s degree. I began studying for an engineering degree, but quit. On the way I also took coursework in computer science and math. I am married and have two children.
I teach and do social research. I have worked in a number of fields, but always with a core in life course sociology/family demography. Over the years, I have dabbled in social stratification, criminlogy, epidemiology, and more recently, social science genetics. The common denominator of all this is using quantitative methods to understand social processes. Another is the use of large-scale administrative register data. Currently, most of my work is related to the interaction of genetics and environments in producing both macrosocial and microsocial outcomes.
On this site, you fill find the occasional post relating to my research. It comes with no warranty.
This website is made with Jekyll and the Moon theme by Taylan Tatli. However, I cloned Thomas J. Leeper’s site that had some minor modifications I liked. The background image is from Grandefjæra, a natural reserve in Ørland, where I grew up. The picture is taken by Karin H. Størseth, whom you should follow on Instagram for high quality nature photos.
